I was awoken around 6:30 this morning to flappy noises coming from behind my bed.  As I have had incidents with bats in my room before, I immediately went into bat-mode. I was Thrilled today when I heard the announcement that up to 125,000 gorillas have been found in an uncharted swampy area of the Congo. This doubles the number known and leaves me much more optimistic that they may avoid extinction (though Ebola is still a serious threat). There's an article in Nature this week about the Pacific Island Nation of Kiribati, which is slowly succumbing to sea level rise, and will eventually be inundated, leaving it's population (currently just under 100,000 people) homeless.
